Six world champions are competing for the top places this season in Formula 1. But no matter how hard they try, there’s one car they won’t be getting past. The official F1™ safety car. In dangerous situations, following an accident, for example, or when safety on the track is compromised, the race organisers can send the safety car out onto the track. This then leads the field and the drivers must line up behind it until the course is given the OK again. Of course, this vehicle has to be equal to the very high standards expected of and by Formula 1, especially where speed and reliability are concerned. Mercedes-Benz has been supplying the safety car since 1996. Since 2010 it has been a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
You will not find any technical modifications or retrofitted lightweight design measures on the official F1™ safety car compared to the series production SLS AMG. With one single exception: for an even more emotional sound, a newly-developed rear silencer has been fitted - a tribute to the fans at the trackside and in front of their TV screens.
