Mercedes-Benz has re-armed its Actros truck with a new generation engine in readiness for its next Irish Fuel Duel Challenge. In European tests, the new OM471, 6-cylinder, 12.8-litre Actros engine returned up to 3% fuel saving, bettering the model it replaces.
Mercedes-Benz attributes the fuel saving figures to a combination of factors. These include sophisticated engine technology, a unique X-Pulse injection system, a patented solution for exhaust gas recirculation and simultaneous control of the exhaust gas turbocharger.
Before this new 2nd generation engine was introduced, the Actros completed numerous Fuel Duel tests on Irish roads and in Irish conditions, returning fuel consumption figures some 10.4% better than its main rivals.
As preparations are made to put the new engine through its paces on Irish roads, Fergus Conheady, commercial vehicle sales manager for Mercedes-Benz in Ireland said: “We expect the results achieved here to mirror those in other markets – namely further fuel saving of up to 3% on top of the 10.4% achieved previously.”
