Drive program

Drive programs for electric driving pleasure.

Comfort, exceptional efficiency or sport – there are different drive programs to choose from, depending on the vehicle:

  • E+ (Economy Plus) allows very economical operation with a reduced output of 65 kW and a top speed limited to around 110 km/h.
  • E (Economy) delivers an output of 100 kW – for a comfort-oriented, economical driving style.
  • S (Sport) offers refined sportiness with maximum acceleration and an output of 132 kW.

If you fully depress the accelerator (kick-down), the maximum output is made available, including in drive programs E+ and E – e.g. for fast, safe overtaking.

Recuperation

Recuperation: who brakes wins.

Recuperation

Recuperation: who brakes wins.

The electric energy recovered through recuperation flows back into the battery, increasing the charge level.

With recuperation the energy flow is depicted in the media display.

The innovative asynchronous motor from Mercedes-Benz can be used as a motor or alternator in either direction of rotation. When you decelerate by taking you foot off the accelerator (overrun mode) or braking, the electric motor acts as an alternator and generates braking torque at the wheels. The recuperated electric energy flows back into the battery, increasing the charge level.

There is a choice of four recuperation levels:

  • D+: gliding, no recuperation
  • D: moderate recuperation
  • D–: high recuperation
  • DAuto: recuperation according to traffic situation

The optional radar-based recuperative brake system works particularly effectively: it uses the data from the radar sensor system to increase recuperation as required or reduce it to zero.

Charging socket

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery can be charged externally via a charging socket on the right-hand side of the rear bumper.

Thanks to an intelligent on-board charging system, you can charge the battery through a wallbox, through a normal domestic socket or at one of the public charging points that are becoming an increasingly common sight.

HV lithium-ion battery

Depending on the model, a fully charged battery allows an all-electric, locally emission-free range of over 30 km.

Hybrid transmission including electric motor

The electric motor and an additional decoupler between the combustion engine and electric motor are completely integrated into the hybrid head of the standard-specification 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission.

Internal combustion engine

Depending on the model, four- or six-cylinder spark-ignition engines are combined with hybrid modules and batteries with different performance ratings.

If required, the output of the combustion engine is supported by the electric motor – for an extra boost when accelerating. The result is performance that combines driving pleasure and comfort with minimal consumption and low emissions.

Recuperative brake system

Recuperation allows energy to be recovered when decelerating and braking.

The greatest potential for consumption reduction in hybrid drive systems lies in the maximisation of energy recovery when decelerating and braking. When you press down on the brake pedal, the electric motor initially takes on the task of decelerating the vehicle, acting as an alternator.

Plug-in hybrid operating modes

Operating modes in the plug-in hybrid.

The selected operating mode is displayed in the plug-in hybrid's instrument cluster.

You can influence the adjustment between electric motor and combustion engine by selecting a drive program and also via the operating mode switch.

Depending on the drive program, four operating modes are available:

  • Hybrid: all hybrid functions such as electric mode, boost and recuperation are available and are automatically deployed according to the driving situation and the route to ensure the lowest possible consumption.

  • E-MODE: for driving on electric power only – for example in city centres or because the HV lithium-ion battery is sufficiently charged for the remainder of the route.

  • E-SAVE: the charge level of the HV lithium-ion battery is maintained – for driving on electric power only at a later point in the journey. Electric mode is therefore only available to a limited extent.

  • CHARGE: charges the HV lithium-ion battery via the combustion engine during the journey. Electric mode is not available here.

Anticipating the road ahead - the route-based operating-mode strategy.

In "Hybrid" mode the route-based operating-mode strategy uses data from the COMAND Online navigation system to ensure that the most efficient use is made of the different operating modes. When a destination is input, the charge/discharge level of the HV lithium-ion battery is controlled for optimum energy use over the entire course of the journey. This ensures that when you reach urban areas, the battery will be as fully charged as possible so that you can drive around town on electric power only.

The haptic accelerator pedal makes changing operating mode easier: if you feel a pressure point in the accelerator pedal during electric driving in E-MODE, you have called up the maximum available electrical power. If you continue pressing the accelerator, the combustion engine kicks in. The ECO Assistant uses a double pulse to signal that, in this given driving situation, you should take your foot off the accelerator in order to switch off the combustion engine.

Economical team player.

The hybrid drive system combines a 4-cylinder diesel engine with a compact electric motor from our modular hybrid portfolio.

Depending on the model, the combustion engine can switch off in overrun mode at speeds below 160 km/h. Using the power of both drive units, the boost function can add significantly to dynamism when accelerating.

More range, more comfort.

The radar-based recuperative brake system ensues more effective energy recovery by adapting the intensity of recuperation to the given driving situation.

When the vehicle decelerates, recuperation transforms the kinetic energy into electric energy, increasing the vehicle's range. To do this, the radar-based recuperative brake system uses data from specific assistance systems.

Powerful and efficient.

The hybrid module, a disc-shaped electric motor, also acts as the starter and generator. The electric motor is positioned between the combustion engine and the automatic transmission.

Depending on the model, the first metres after moving off and speeds of up to 35 km/h are driven on electric power only. The electric motor also supports the diesel engine when accelerating (boost effect) and is used in generator mode to recuperate energy.

Compact and highly effective.

The HV lithium-ion battery is the heart of the compact and highly efficient hybrid drive system. It stores the energy recovered through recuperation, which powers the electric motor.

The intelligent function ensures that optimum use is made of the course of the road and the terrain to recuperate energy. Using data from COMAND Online, a precise calculation is made of when it is best to use electric power and when it can best be recuperated. For example it makes sense to use the extra boost from the electric motor when driving uphill and to discharge the battery. And then recharge it again by means of recuperation when driving downhill as the brakes have to be used in any case.
