Advantages of all-wheel drive [1]

All-wheel drive – more traction, more control, more sovereignty.

Permanent all-wheel drive – also known as All-Wheel Drive (AWD) or 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) – is available for Sprinter and Vito. It distributes drive power evenly to all 4 wheels, ensuring optimal traction and driving stability in every situation. Discover the benefits of all-wheel drive for your driving experience.

Improved traction while driving.

All-wheel drive ensures better traction, which is particularly advantageous off-road on slippery or loose surfaces such as ice and snow.

Enhanced stability and smart adaptability for a superior drive.

By distributing drive power to all four wheels, the vehicle’s stability on difficult terrain is significantly improved. At the same time, the Sprinter’s permanent all-wheel drive with Torque-on-Demand[2] automatically adapts to driving conditions in milliseconds. This ensures that the Sprinter with a combustion engine always delivers the best traction in all its body configurations, such as panel van, platform vehicle, chassis, or Tourer.

Extended application options for demanding driving manoeuvres.

The all-wheel drive provides additional traction in the Sprinter, the largest van from Mercedes-Benz, making it ideal for towing, driving uphill, and accelerating.

The Sprinter 4x4 with torque-on-demand.

With all-wheel drive, you can better handle steep inclines, driving on loose or slippery surfaces, and challenging road conditions: The all-wheel-drive system distributes drive power to the front and rear axles as needed. It actively stabilizes the vehicle when oversteer or understeer threatens. In mountainous terrain, heavy vehicles in particular benefit from greater control when starting and maneuvering. Since all-wheel drive also increases ground clearance and fording depth, steeper ramps and approach angles can be navigated. This is particularly advantageous on unpaved roads and at construction sites. [3]

The Vito with permanent 4x4 all-wheel drive.

Better traction in difficult road conditions: On slippery surfaces, wheels with insufficient traction can be slowed down using the Electronic Traction System 4ETS. At the same time, drive torque is transferred to the wheels with good traction. Power is distributed to the front and rear axles in a 45 : 55 ratio. Since the vehicle height is barely affected by the all-wheel drive, the vehicle remains suitable for most underground parking garages. [4]
